Planning

Planning is an important initial step in designing a timetable for a School. I used to be able to start with just a general idea of how the elective blocks/lines would fit together in each year level. There was enough flexibility in the Curriculum, staff and rooms to fix any issue as it arose.  However, the focus of School's to be more financially accountable has reduced staff and rooms. This added with the increase in part time staff, has greatly diminished the flexibility the timetabler once had to solve issues.

Planning is a strategy that may help solve these problems before they arise. Also, in my experience good planning also leads to a higher quality timetable. After Planning go to Elective Lines. The following videos try to explain the ideas of planning:
